           The future of China tariffs is up for discussion in the United States

           U.S Trade Representative Katherine Tai said that reducing the U.S tariffs on imported goods from China in one of many options that could be considered to assist in reducing inflation which had increased at a 41-year high of 8.5% between March 2021 – March 2022.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           Tai has cautioned that the U.S administration does not want to make decisions fighting inflation that may damage trade relations with China in the long run. The Wall Street Journal reported that Treasury Secretary Jenet Yellen and Commerce Gina Raimondo favour rolling back tariffs, while Tai and others are weary that by rolling tariffs back, the U.S may lose leverage over China in their initiative aimed at reforming China’s economic behaviour. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Tai’s office announced that it’s commencing a mandated review of the first group of tariffs on China-made goods, which could involve an analysis if they should keep the levies as they are, reduce them or remove them. The majority of promo products sold in the $23.2 billion North American industry are produced in China. Current tariffs on promo imports, including apparel and hard goods have contributed to price increases on industry-sold products in recent years. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           According to data from the U.S. Census, total U.S. imports from China reached $538.51 billion in 2018. The figure dropped to $450.76 billion in 2019 and fell further again in 2020 to $434.75 billion. Despite tariffs and supply chain disruption, U.S. imports from China rose in 2021, reaching $456.83 billion. If the tariffs change, a reduction may also help in lowering promotional product costs in Canada.

           A rise in Covid-19 cases has prompted shutdowns to occur in a major manufacturing hub in China. This has caused concern among promotional product suppliers in North America as this could cause a further in delay in production and delivery throughout Canada &amp;amp; US. A majority of promotional products are produced in China and inventory has continued to face product shortages and supply delays.
            &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           China has authorized a week-long shutdown in Shenzhen, a powerhouse in manufacturing various hard good products, from USBs to speakers and other tech products. As the inventory for these products has been unreliable before the shut down, it is expected that the shutdown in China will cause further backups and delays in shipping and production of these and other hard goods products.
            &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           As China accounts for roughly 29% global manufacturing, it could take up to several months for product supply and delivery to return to regular levels. It is expected that this will continue to cause an increase in pricing on these products and other factors at play, there is no predicting how much these prices may rise and what demand will look like in the future for these products. The best course of action should be to order what you need while you can get it as TSG does not know how long that current supplies will last, and how long that it will take to restock these products that are in high demand.

      <title>‘Onshoring’ Resurgence in United States</title>

           Success for American manufacturers as well as the global supply chain crisis has compelled calls to bring production back to the U.S.
          &#xD;

&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           There have been high profile examples of “onshoring” happening in the US lately as global supply chain issues have continued to be problematic. As such, many manufacturers have been looking at bringing manufacturing to countries closer to American shores. “There’s a strong interest and drive for domestic manufacturing to increase, not only in the U.S. but in many industrialized countries,” says Jose Gomez, president of Kalamazoo, “There’s evidence that the needle is currently moving in that direction, but there are structural constraints that will limit the scale of this move.” With this opinion, there are also promo companies who have doubts as it comes to the promo industry. As Teresa Fang, Vice President of Alphabroder stated “There will certainly be efforts to bring promo supply lines closer, but the reality of the situation is that for many reasons – from labor cost to the ability to secure raw materials in a cost-effective manner – it will be very difficult to do so.”
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The global supply chain disruption of the last couple years, a result of fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, has caused problems across industries. In promo, it’s most notably led to issues like inventory shortages, higher product prices and longer production/order fulfillment times. That’s driven increased calls among some distributors and other industry stakeholders to bring manufacturing back to the U.S.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           Some companies such as Intel have announced its intention to build the “largest silicon manufacturing location on the planet.” The total investment is said to top $20 billion. General Motors has contemplated investing close to $4 billion to expand electric vehicle and battery production, and Toyota said it is planning a $1.3 billion battery plant which will employ 1,750 people.  Before these were announced, Samsung had declared that it will construct a $17 billion semiconductor plant in Texas.  These companies will help drive “onshoring” in the U.S. as they bring more jobs and economic growth to the country and will be a good way to measure the success of increasing manufacturing in the U.S. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           This is good news for the Auto and Tech industry, but promo still has its doubts as it is unsure if they will be able to bring manufacturing closer. China currently manufactures the majority of promo goods sold domestically and can produce these goods for cheaper than what can be produced in the U.S. and Canada. “When I graduated from West Point in 1993, more than 50% of the apparel in the U.S. was made in the U.S.,” says Dean Wegner, founder and CEO of Authentically American “Today it’s tragically less than 3%. Apparel production moved overseas to chase cheap labor and higher profits.” Going forward, he believes Made-in-America items will account for a greater percentage of sales in promo, but viewed at scale it will be “a nominal increase in the short term. There’s not enough production capacity in the U.S. to support a significant increase.” There has been an opposing opinion from Montaubin, senior vice president for product management and sourcing at Koozie Group “It would be impossible to build an alternative supply chain overnight” “There are so many steps in the process, from qualifying the factories to navigating transportation, and that doesn’t even consider the sheer cost. We believe we will continue to rely heavily on Asia for the foreseeable future, but we wouldn’t be surprised if a small portion of the supply chain comes back to the U.S. and Central/Latin America.”
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           As there are many conflicting ideas, it is tough to decide on who will be right when it comes to the future of promo, and if “onshoring” will be a success in the U.S. Bottom-line: U.S. producers are out there. Some are thriving. Still, most products sold in the North American promo market will continue to be made outside these shores.  We will have to wait and see what the future hold for the promo industry when it comes to 'onshoring'

      <title>Amazon Shutdowns Program Accused of Price-Fixing</title>

           The tech giant denies wrongdoing and says its Sold by Amazon was legal, Washington’s Attorney General alleged it involved price-fixing and violates antitrust law.

           Amazon is ending its third-party seller program that Attorney General Bob Ferguson alleged is involved in price-fixing.  Price-fixing is an illegal agreement between participants which agree to buy or sell products or services at a set cost. Amazon is accused of using technology to agree on prices with third-party sellers who sold on the multinational technology company’s e-commerce platform rather than compete with those businesses.  Amazon will now need to provide annual updates on its compliance with antitrust laws. Ferguson said in a press release that “Consumers lose when corporate giants like Amazon fix prices to increase their profits,” “Today’s action promotes product innovation and consumer choice, and makes the market more competitive for sellers in Washington state and across the country.” Amazon had declared net sales of $110.80 Billion during the third quarter of 2021. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Ferguson alleges that Sold by Amazon drew in third-party sellers by guaranteeing that they would receive an agreed upon minimum payment for sales in exchange for their agreement to stop competing with Amazon. This program resulted in product prices increasing as Amazon’s algorithm was used to match prices from certain external retailers. As these prices increased, these sellers experienced a loss in sales and profits from Amazon’s algorithm and pricing practices. As these prices had been raised, many consumers had switched to buying Amazon branded products instead of third-party seller products which helped Amazon maximize their profits.

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           According to the investigation, a majority of products offered in the Sold by Amazon program have been set at artificially high prices. As this algorithm was used, sellers had limited ability to lower the price of the product without withdrawing from Amazon’s third-party seller program. Many e-commerce platforms are available for third-party sellers, but Amazon has a large share in the e-commerce market with a forcasted 50% market-share. As many businesses try to compete with companies such as Amazon, trying to break into the market can be difficult as they cannot offer as many products at the low prices that Amazon branded products are being sold at. Many consumers also forget that they can contact these third-party sellers to support them directly or they many even be able to offer their original price before the algorithm had adjusted their products pricing.

Distributors say that they are now better prepared and equipped to handle the upcoming spike and suspect that inventory shortages should not be as bad as in the peak of 2020.

Although experts are predicting that sales will continue to grow and not be impacted by this variant, tighter restrictions and shutdowns are occurring. Many businesses have not seen their sales impacted but there is a strong prediction that supply and acquiring products will remain to be an issue.

           As these issues continue to grow without allowing production to resume back to pre-pandemic levels, it is expected that inventory will be difficult to acquire, and the prices of these products will rise again. There is as mix of conflicting ideas as to how consumers purchasing habits will be affected by these new restrictions. The future of supply and how pricing is going to be set is going to be determined on how consumers will behave with these new restrictions. If there is another rise in demand and higher spending, inflation will occur and prices of production, shipping and supply grow higher. If consumers slow in their spending habit the opposite will occur, helping alleviate the backlogs at ports and production facilities will be able to restock to comfortable levels again, causing prices the level out in the long run. Either of these events will create a different type of problem for suppliers and distributors whether it causes a loss of profits and slower sales, or if the current supply issues persist or worsen.

With all these issues, the one that is hardest to manage is trying to keep pricing at a reasonable price is also becoming a difficult challenge.          As the Covid-19 pandemic still affects our every day lives, it creates more issues and delays in manufacturing and larger businesses who can't keep up with demand. As larger companies such as Gildan have been hit as hard as many other companies, their production of printwear has fallen 75%. On top of this, many garment companies in Central America had been devastated by hurricanes.           As normalcy has begun to return to businesses and retail environments, the demand for garments and other supplies has increased dramatically, and this has increased the shortage of supply and as production of these products are still at a crawl. 2022 is expected to see the same issues as previous years. As these problems continue, the prices to keep manufacturing will also continue to rise, the Advertising Specialty Institute predicts that prices will increase anywhere between 2%-10% this is on top of the 6.8% increase that was seen from 2020-2021. Along with all of these increases, worker's wages have increased 4.6% in that same time period.
